Dr. Mauro Pavão obtained a bachelor's degree in Marine Biology from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1987 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Federal University of São Paulo in 1993. Soon after that, in 1994, he was appointed Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry Leopoldo De Meis. In 1996, He went to the Division of Hematology-Oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis, USA, where he worked as a Post-Doc until 1998, under the supervision of Prof. Douglas M. Toffefsen. During this period he received a fellowship from PEW - Latin American Fellows Program in Biomedical Science. Upon his return to Brazil, he was appointed Head of Laboratory and started independent work in his own laboratory, forming a group composed of graduating and undergraduate students. In the same year, He moved his laboratory to the UFRJ-University Hospital and started to interact with clinical doctors, carrying out basic translational research projects that resulted in several publications. Currently, Dr. Pavão is a Full Professor of Biochemistry at the Institute of Medical Biochemistry Leopoldo De Meis-UFRJ and his work focuses on the study of complex carbohydrates and their biotechnological applications.
