IRAN ALGAE 2021

Where All Algae Researchers and specialists Meet

Algae is an organism that despite general conceptualization, has many applications and is widely used in diverse industries such as; food, feed, agriculture, cosmetics, energy, bio-medicine, etc. Nowadays, Heath is the main priority of most people and corporations are trying to preserve the environment due to global warming and endangered species, which leads to focusing on biodegradable, environmentally friendly, and high nutritional valued substances suchlike algae and its extracts for their unique characteristics.

Considering the pandemics and chaos caused by the health situation due to COVID-19, communication, knowledge exchange, and recruitment of young and zealous researchers has become a major obstacle; therefore, it would be beneficial to provide a friendly environment for further connection not only for researchers, professors, and students but also for corporations.

The Iranian National Algae Culture Collection (INACC), is honored to hold an online workshop, an international workshop on the technology innovation of algae, presented by professors and researchers in related areas to share and enhance knowledge about algae and its applications.

Workshop Topics

Introduction to Algae
Introduction to Algae
Algae cover a range of organisms from different phylogenetic groups with approximately thirty thousand species described. In general, these can be categorized as multicellular macroalgae and unicellular microalgae. Algae are widely used in many different industries due to their unique characteristics.
Algae in Agriculture
Algae in Agriculture
To meet the growing demand for food, the production and application of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals have intensified, which consequently pollute the environment and pose a serious threat to all living beings. Various microorganisms such as algae are receiving much attention as environmental-friendly alternatives to synthetic chemicals.
Algae in Feed
Algae in Feed
Seaweeds have a long history of use as livestock feed. Some seaweeds have the potential to contribute to the protein and energy requirements of livestock, while others contain a number of bioactive compounds, which could be used as prebiotic for enhancing production and health status of livestock.
Algae in Biomaterial
Algae in Biomaterial
Oceans not only consist of water but are also an abundant source of diverse biomaterials. Marine biomaterial such as algae because of their biodegradability, bioactivity and biocompatibility characteristics is an emerging area of research with significant biological, biomedical and industrial applications
Algae in Bioenergy
Algae in Bioenergy
The potential of algal biomass as a source of liquid and gaseous biofuels has been the subject of considerable research over the past few decades, due to the high potential biomass yield of algae and cultivation systems that do not compete for land or freshwater with terrestrial crops.
Novel Algae Applications
Novel Algae Applications
Besides conventional applications of algae as mentioned before there are numerous other applications due to their eccentric characteristics that need more research, such as, algae in space, the effect of algae on COVID, algae as biosensors, etc.
Algae in Biorefinery
Algae in Biorefinery
The concept of using algae biomass as input for biorefinery is not new and has been discussed extensively in recent year. The algae biorefinery concept represents the transformation of algae biomass through a sustainable processing way to produce biofuels and value-added chemical products.
Algae in Food Industry
Algae in Food Industry
Algae have been used as food since ancient times. Algae are very popular among vegetarians, who use them as starters, additions, and main courses. Interest in algae was for a long time focused on the production of gelling, thickening, and stabilizing substances to be used in the food industry.
Algae In Aquaculture
Algae In Aquaculture
Algae are important to the aquatic food chains because they are primary producers. The main applications of algae for aquaculture are associated with nutrition, being used fresh as sole component or as food additive to basic nutrients and for inducing other biological activities.
Algae In Cosmetics
Algae In Cosmetics
A global tendency for products considered healthy, environmentally sustainable, and ecologically obtained led to cosmetics industries to fund the research and development of new products containing compounds or extracts from algae which are frequently used in cosmetics.
Algae in Biomedicine & Pharmaceuticals
Algae in Biomedicine & Pharmaceuticals
Algae represent a major untapped resource of genetic potential for valuable bioactive agents and fine biochemical. Algae are emerging as one of the most promising sources of sustainable crops with potential health benefits. The pharmaceutical potential of the large variety of algae species is just starting to be explored.
Bioeconomy
Bioeconomy
Algae, due to its characteristics such as high protein content, antioxidant, and other unique properties have a wide application in different industries, but some applications and procedures are highly expensive and time-consuming. Therefore it is important to evaluate the economic aspects of the algae related projects beforehand to make sure that they are beneficial.
Algae in Wastewater Treatment & Bioremediation
Algae in Wastewater Treatment & Bioremediation
Untreated or improperly treated wastewater has become a major pollution problem for rivers and coastal waters. A related problem is our inability to recover its useful components. Algae can absorb impurities, and also use wastewater as a cultivation medium for growth.
